  • Driving on tyres with a depth of under 1.6mm could result in a £2,500 fine per tyre (£5,000 for goods vehicles) and three points. This could result in a £10,000 fine and 12 penalty points if all tyres are faulty.
  • Lumps, bulges, cuts and tears can all make a tyre defective under the law.
  • Tyre performance deteriorates rapidly after 3mm resulting in a 25% reduction in efficiency which can add 25 feet to your stopping distance in the wet.
  • RoSPA recommends that tyres are changed once the tread reaches 3mm in depth.
